Mark Magidson
An inventor and industrial designer with numerous patents and a diverse technical background, Mark Magidson developed a successful company in the mid-1980s. He then sought to broaden his interests into the arts.
Frustrated by the lack of venues in the IMAX format, he subsequently pioneered a first of its kind conversion system for the film in the new 870 film format, expanding its availability beyond the limited confines of the IMAX theater group. That system has since been widely emulated. Viewing Chronos as a stepping stone to a broader and more complex film in the same genre, he and Fricke began to develop the 70mm feature that was to become BARAKA.

In 1993 the film was released to critical and audience acclaim worldwide. It has won numerous festival and audience awards, including the FIPRESCI (International critics) Award for Best Picture at the Montreal World Film Festival. Magidson produced, co-wrote and co-edited BARAKA. He received a nomination from the American Cinema Editors (A.C.E.) for outstanding achievement in documentary editing for his work as one of the editors of BARAKA, as well as the Award for Excellence from the United Nations Society of Writers. Three years in the making, including a 14 month period of intensive location shooting, BARAKA takes the viewer on an unforgettable journey to 24 countries. The imagery is as varied as life itself.

In 1999 St. Ann’s Press published BARAKA: a visual Journal, a stunning collection of still photographs that Mr. Magidson made while on location for the film. Signed copies of this monograph are available in our bookstore. BARAKA (the motion picture) is widely available on DVD and VHS.
Print Information: All photographic prints are archivally processed gelatin silver prints or Ektacolor RC Print Photograph made from original photographic negatives under the supervision of the artist. Prints are unmounted. No digital manipulation is used at any stage of the process.
Prints are available in three standard paper sizes: 11×14″, 16×20″ and 20×24″. For both technical and aesthetic reasons, not all images are available in all sizes (please inquire). Actual image sizes vary from that of the standard paper size. All prints are signed and numbered in ink by the artist au verso.
Prints are produced in a limited edition of fifty total prints, encompassing all three print sizes. Current print prices range from $400 to $800, depending on print size.
