Camille Seaman – Chasing Fury

Chasing Fury: Photographs by Camille Seaman

Soulcatcher Studio is proud to present a dynamic new body of work by renowned up-and-coming photographer Camille Seaman. Seaman (Shinnecock Tribe, b.1969) is an Award-winning American photographer best known for her evocative Polar images. Capturing the essence of awe and beauty of indigenous cultures and environments, in a sophisticated documentary/fine art tradition is her trademark.

Seaman states about her second series in continuation of The Big Cloud project; “In my continuation of exploring subjects in nature that have an ability to illustrate the interconnection of all life on Earth, I found myself stalking a type of single giant cloud called a Supercell.”

The following images were made in the Spring of 2011 and 2012, in Texas, Kansas, Nebraska and South Dakota.

The storms we were chasing were Supercells, capable of producing grapefruit sized hail, and spectacular tornadoes; they were 50 miles wide and reached as high as 65,000 ft. into the atmosphere. These clouds were so large that they had the capability of blocking all daylight, making it very dark and ominous standing under them.”

One of the most humbling experiences of her previous storm-chasing tour, Seaman says, was stopping in Greensberg, Kansas, a city that was leveled by a tornado that killed 11 people in May 2007. When the caravan of storm-chasers would pull into a diner in one of the small towns in Tornado Alley, Seaman says, locals were unhappy to see them, “because it’s a bad omen for them. They would say, ‘Is it coming this way?’ “

But Seaman sees the clouds she photographed as more complex than simply a source of destruction. “In that force is also creation,” she says. She adds, “Hopefully in my life, that will be the line that goes through everything that I do. I’m really trying in a positive way to show people a connection to their environment.”

Seaman has traveled to over 30 countries creating timeless images. Her work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally and published in magazines worldwide (including National Geographic). Seaman’s career was launched when she traveled north to the Arctic in 2003 where she made stunning photographs of the little known island of Svalbard and its Arctic environment. She has studied with many top-name social-documentary photographers, including Steve McCurry, Sebastião Salgado and Paul Fusco. Seaman herself often teaches workshops on photography and self-publishing. She was named by American Photo Magazine as one of the top 15 emerging photographers of 2007. Other select awards include: Artist in Residence onboard M/V Orlova in Antarctica (2007); Critical Mass Top Monograph Book Award (2006); National Geographic Award (2006); Nikon.Net Editor’s Choice Award (2006).
