Women Empowered – rosa

Rosa Maria Ortiz, 27
Ixtahuacan, Guatamala

After Rosa was brutally gang raped, she broke the tradition of silence and became one of the first women in her village to press charges against her abusers. She initially hesitated to take action because the rapists had threatened to take her life if she exposed them. After confiding in her mother and her friend Maria, a CARE Outreach worker, she decided to take the perpetrators to court. She won the case and the men were sentenced to 1 month in prison and fined $1,300. When I met Rosa, she was spending time volunteering to counsel and support other women victims of violence in her community.
