Women Empowered – bashidu

Bashidu, 6
Bowku Village, Ghana

Traditionally, girls in Bowku Village have been responsible for hauling water, cooking and tending the corn field. Due to their demanding schedule, many girls drop out of school at young ages. It is also customary for girls to marry at as early as 13 years of age. CARE began a program teaching gender equality in Bowku village 10 years ago. Due to the program’s emphasis on female education and delayed marriage, there is a good chance that Bashidu will be allowed to continue her education through secondary school.
