Of the Earth: Still Life Studies 2001~2004

Paul Caponigro's prints are clearly some of the finest ever created in photography. They awaken us to the beauty of objects, the moods of a landscape, and sensitize our vision to the subtleties of light. Through Caponigro's eyes, nature is a curtain upon which shadows from another world play. His images evoke the invisible sources behind physical phenomena, the reality we cannot see penetrating the one we do. Before his camera lens, nature unmasks her sense of conscious awareness and quiet purpose. Silence responds with energy and rhythms from beyond nature shape her movements. It is his artistic passion to have us set aside our daily habits of mind, to engage our intuition and apprehend a wider reality, a reality both veiled, yet revealed, by our physical surroundings. ~By David Stroud, from an essay published in Paul Caponigro: Masterworks from Forty Years, Copyright © David Stroud; Photography West Graphics, 1993. With this newest body of work Caponigro continues to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. The twenty-four images seen below, produced between 2001 and 2004, invoke a timelessness that can only be found in nature. Rocks polished smooth by the elements, gnarled, abstract forms of wood and innumerable, porcelain-like gifts from the sea. Each object, as seen through Caponigro's eyes, invites the viewer to stop and meditate on the processes of decay and rebirth. As the artist himself states, "Photography is a medium, a language, through which I might come to experience directly, live more closely with, the interaction between myself and nature." Paul Caponigro (born 1932) is an artist who places technical perfection in the service of an intense, mystical sensibility. He has described his photographs as "dreams locked in silver." .They allow us, "if only for brief moments, to sense the thread which holds all things together." .Caponigro's first one-man exhibition took place at the George Eastman House in 1958; since that time he has photographed and exhibited throughout the world. .He has received multiple grants from the Guggenheim Foundation and National Endowment for the Arts, and continues to delight the photographic community with his glorious photographic dreamscapes. Current print prices are set by the artist and start at $6,000.00..
