Women Empowered – latifa

Latifa, 9
Boko, Ghana

Latifa attends school six hours a day. Like most girls her age she is also responsible for hauling water, cooking and tending the cornfield. Because of this demanding schedule school drop out rates for girls are high, and many get married as early as thirteen. CARE began a program teaching gender equality in Boko Village ten years ago. Because of the program’s emphasis on female education and delayed marriage, there is a good chance that Latifa will be allowed to continue her education.
