"It is always helpful to find a dealer like Eric J. Keller, who can answer questions quickly and efficiently because it allows us the opportunity to keep pace with the changes in the market place. Eric is a great source for fine art photography."

Elliott Erwitt: Unseen Ironic Iconic

Soulcatcher Studio is honored to present the photography of legendary Magnum photographer Elliott Erwitt (born 1928). Below you will find a retrospective exhibition of his work, along with current pricing and print information. Please inquire if you have other favorite images by this artist that do not appear in this exhibition. We can offer his entire portfolio of work for sale.

At 86 years old,
Elliott Erwitt is still considered a leading photographer of his generation. He is a member of the prestigious Magnum Agency, and has been making photographs all over the world since the late 1940s. Born in 1928 in Paris of Russian parents, Erwitt emigrated to the United States with his family in 1939. He studied photography in Los Angeles City College (1942-1944) then film at the New School for Social Research (1948-1950). As a young man, Edward Steichen helped Erwitt get his first commercial photography job. From 1950 to 1952, Erwitt was a freelance photographer for Collier's, Look, Life and Holiday. He became a Magnum Agency associate in 1953 and a full member in 1954.

Many of the images within this exhibition were previously unpublished until the released of the artist's book, UNSEEN. Erwitt states, "UNSEEN is different from my past books in that it includes images never published along with a few published many years ago, which of course suggested the title. In the course of a long career in photography many pictures that may be worthy of publication are often passed over and forgotten. This is true for many very busy photographers running around the world from one project to another.
With the benefit of hindsight, and with a bit of time for contemplating my fifty plus years as a professional photographer, as well as adding some recent unpublished images, the UNSEEN book was born."

Distinguished as both a documentary and commercial photographer, Elliott Erwitt has made some of the most memorable photographs of the twentieth century. Known for spontaneous humorous snaps, along with poignant documentary studies, he has spent the last sixty years capturing the famous and the ordinary, the remarkable and the mundane, often using the camera to express his unique sense of humor. In the process he has produced some of this past century's most beloved and enduring images. He has published over thirty-five books of his photographs and his original photographs reside in most major museum collections. Among countless other honors, Erwitt is the recipient of the I.C.P. Infinity Award for Lifetime Achievement. He is without a doubt one of the era's finest image-makers.
