Awash Fontale, Ethiopia As a midwife and leader of the circumcision ceremony in the Afar culture, Asgeli has performed hundreds of female circumcisions in her lifetime. She began by helping her grandmother with the circumcisions when she was just 14 years old. She is now one of the leading women advocating the end of female circumcisions among the 1.3 million Afar people. She said, “We did the circumcisions because that is what had always been done.
